New Delhi. After record rainfall in most parts of northern and southern parts of the country during the month of August, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the intensity and activity of the southwest monsoon will remain intact in September as well, due to which heavy rainfall may continue in many areas. This will increase the possibility of damage to Kharif crops.
According to the IMD report, 109 percent rainfall is expected during the month of September as compared to the long period average (LPA) at the all India level.
The situation is already very bad due to cloudburst, land slide and rock cracking in the hilly states, while the heavy rains of September can worsen the situation even more.
During the month of August, torrential rains continued in the mountainous areas. September surplus rainfall can cause heavy destruction of Kharif crops in the plains as the fields may remain waterlogged.
According to official figures, till August 22, the total production area of Kharif crops in the country has increased to 1073.90 lakh hectares, which is 35.40 lakh hectares more than the sowing area during the same period last year.
Under this, there has been a tremendous increase especially in the area of paddy and maize. The sowing process is still going on in some areas.
Three months of the four-month period of the southwest monsoon have ended and now the fourth month - September has begun.
The long-term average of monsoon rainfall for this month has been estimated to be 167.9 mm, while the actual rainfall may be 9 percent more than this.
During the current month, normal or more rainfall is expected in the rest of the country except some parts of the eastern and northeastern region, far southern peninsula and some areas of northwestern India.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is no sign of monsoon withdrawing from the country at least for the next two weeks. There is a possibility of formation of more low pressure areas. It has started raining more in the month of September.
