Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh government has made a huge change in the ratio of food grains distributed among the beneficiaries through the Public Distribution System (PDS). Although the monthly quantity of food grains given to each beneficiary will remain at 5 kg, now 4 kg wheat and 1 kg rice will be distributed in the capital, whereas till now 3 kg rice and 2 kg wheat were being given.
In this way, the quantity of wheat has been increased by 2 kg and the quantity of rice has been reduced by 2 kg. The central government has accepted the proposal sent by the Madhya Pradesh government in this regard.
The new rule of food grain distribution will be applicable in all the districts of Madhya Pradesh including the capital Bhopal.
According to the Food and Civil Supplies Minister of Madhya Pradesh, to correct the anomaly in the ratio of food grain distribution, the Union Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister was met and requested to give 75 percent wheat and 25 percent rice.
The Central Government has a good stock of wheat, so it had no difficulty in accepting this request and the government has issued a new order in this regard.
It is understood that due to high allocation of rice under PDS in Madhya Pradesh, a large part of it was reaching the open market. It is worth noting that wheat is more preferred in the state than rice.
There were reports of PDS rice from Madhya Pradesh reaching South India through the open market. Rice is the main food of people in South India.
The state government was also receiving complaints that the beneficiaries of Madhya Pradesh were selling a large part of the free rice received in PDS to traders at low prices.
But this process may stop after the implementation of the new rule and then the traders may be forced to buy government rice sold under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).
