Myanmar's export of pulses, particularly urad, has been significant in the year 2024. According to the data from the Over Seas Agri Trade Association (OATA), the country exported a total of 8,34,180 tonnes of urad during the first 11 months (January-November) of the year. In addition, it exported 3,01,386 tonnes of tuvar and 5,76,613 tonnes of moong. The major importer of urad and tuvar has been India, while moong was mainly exported to other countries because its import is banned in India.

The export quantity has varied throughout the year. The highest export of urad was recorded in May 2024 at 1,02,662 tonnes, while the lowest was in February at 51,948 tonnes. Other monthly exports of urad were as follows:

• April: 87,492 tonnes
• June: 65,239 tonnes
• July: 71,527 tonnes
• August: 95,762 tonnes
• September: 87,346 tonnes
• October: 62,379 tonnes

The period from October to February is considered the off-season for urad, leading to a slight decrease in exports during these months.

In terms of tuvar, the highest export occurred in May with 40,572 tonnes, while the lowest was in July with 12,704 tonnes. The monthly figures for tuvar exports were:

Myanmar is a key supplier of urad to India, which has contributed to the increase in production of urad and tuvar in Myanmar in recent years. However, India does have alternatives for tuvar from African countries but remains heavily dependent on Myanmar for urad imports. The new crop of pulses is expected to arrive in Myanmar in the first quarter of 2025.
