Rangoon. Shyam Narsaria of Arvi International, a leading trading and exporting organization, says that there is a tremendous demand for moong from Myanmar in China and for urad in India, which is providing a good incentive and opportunity to local farmers to increase its production.
A large quantity of moong is being imported from Myanmar to China, due to which more than 3.25 lakh tons of moong has been exported from Myanmar during the last six months. The export process is still going on.
According to Shyam Narsaria, last year about 7.50 lakh tons of urad was produced in Myanmar, while during the current year it is expected to increase by 20 percent and reach the top level of 9 lakh tons.
Similarly, the production of Arhar (Tuvar) is also expected to reach around 3.50 lakh tons with an increase of 17-18 percent. As far as moong is concerned, its production in Myanmar is expected to increase by 10 percent from about 6 lakh tons last year to 6.25-6.50 lakh tons this year.
It is always difficult to accurately estimate the sowing area of pulses crops in Myanmar because there are many small farmers who cultivate it in a limited area.
The government also faces great difficulty in estimating the sowing area. But it can definitely be said that the production of pulses in the country is increasing rapidly.
The government is also giving full encouragement to farmers and trade organizations. Good quality seeds and fertilizers are being made available to farmers at reasonable prices. During the year 2025, the total production of pulses crops in Myanmar is estimated to cross the limit of 20 lakh tons and reach 220 lakh tons.
Although now moong is being imported to China from Brazil, Argentina and Australia, but Myanmar remains the most prominent supplier.
The annual import level of moong in China has now increased to more than 5 lakh tonnes. According to Shyam Narsaria,
the demand for import of pulses crops in India is seen to be less this time because there is a huge stock of yellow peas and the deadline for its duty-free import has also been extended to 31 March 2026. But the demand of the festive season is expected to remain strong for the next three months after August 10.
The global market price of pulses has also softened somewhat. In August, its price has come below the minimum support price. The demand for all pulses of Myanmar may increase by 10 percent in the next one and a half months.
