New Edible Oil Order Expected Soon

New Delhi. The Union Food Secretary has said that a new order will soon be notified with modern, transparent and technologically advanced provisions for the edible oil industry and trade sector so that this sector can be better regulated.
The Vegetable Oil Products, Production and Availability (VOPPA or VOPPA) Regulation Order 2025 will replace the currently prevalent 2011 order.
Under this new order, the production, import, stock and sale of edible oils will be monitored through digital means and it will be made more robust.
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra had recently said that before finalizing this new order, discussions were held with all the associations and organizations related to the edible oil industry and trade sector and suggestions were invited from them. Now its draft is almost ready and it will be notified soon.
After the implementation of the new order, it will be mandatory for the edible oil industry to give all the information about production, sales and price to the government.
This will bring transparency in the market. At present, the government has to depend on associations and organizations for these figures, whereas after the implementation of the new order, every company (millers processors) will have to provide its data directly.
Under the new framework, it will be possible to track the production price and stock of edible oils in real time and this will help in providing important information and figures to all the parties associated with the industry.
It will also be possible to comply with the new rules and provisions, keep an eye on the market and improve the quality of the product.
The government has tried to provide relief to the common consumers by cutting the import duty on crude edible oils. Although the overall food inflation has come down to the lowest level since 2021, but the prices of edible oil are seeing an increase of 20 to 30 percent as compared to last year, which has increased the concern of the government.
