Mumbai. The bilateral Tariff Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Britain (England) will completely open the British market for Indian turmeric and there can be a strong demand for it among Indians living there.

Although India is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the world, Britain is not among the top 5 importers of Indian turmeric. There is a huge scope for increasing exports there.

The chairman of the recently formed Turmeric Board says that the Prime Minister has set a target for the board to increase the export of turmeric to Rs 5000 crore by 2030 and this FTA will be of great help in achieving the set target. India has dominated the production and export of turmeric for a long time.

The average annual production of turmeric is around 13 lakh tonnes globally. In which India alone contributes 80 percent. China is in second place which produces about 8 percent of turmeric. According to the available data, during the financial year 2024-25 (April-March), about 1.37 lakh tonnes of turmeric was exported from India, which included shipments of 26,285 tonnes to Bangladesh, 22,062 tonnes to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 6419 tonnes to Malaysia and 6689 tonnes to the US. The remaining exports were made to other countries. There is a lot of fluctuation in the price of turmeric in the domestic market.

The door for duty-free export of Indian turmeric to Britain has opened, which is expected to create better opportunities for the producers and exporters of India.

Indian exporters will now buy it in greater quantity from domestic producers, which may improve the demand and price in the market. This will also encourage farmers to increase the production of turmeric.

According to official data, about 11.16 lakh tonnes of turmeric was produced inside the country in the 2024-25 season. Its major producing states include Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Odisha etc.

During the 2024-25 season, turmeric production was estimated to be 1.45 lakh tonnes in Tamil Nadu, 1.33 lakh tonnes in Telangana and 1.07 lakh tonnes in Karnataka. Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra produce about one-fourth of the country's turmeric.

Farmers have held turmeric stock in anticipation of better income, while traders are now keeping a close eye on export demand, while buyers are currently purchasing turmeric only in quantities sufficient to meet immediate needs.

According to trade analysts, the price of turmeric may remain between Rs 11900-12300 per quintal during February to April 2026 when the new crop will be harvested.
