News Capsule: Discussion Underway on Wheat OMSS Scheme
★ Discussions are currently underway regarding wheat sales under the OMSS (Open Market Sale Scheme). Under the FAQ category, it is being proposed that wheat may be sold at ₹2,600 per quintal. Meanwhile, according to market sources, URS wheat is proposed to be sold at ₹2,585 per quintal, although no official confirmation has been issued so far.
★ According to available information, out of the total wheat stock of approximately 35.1 million tonnes, around 23.7 million tonnes belong to the URS category, representing a substantial volume.
★ Considering the current market conditions—higher production, adequate government stocks, and improved availability—it is believed that the government may launch the OMSS program earlier than usual this year. This could help reduce government inventories ahead of the next procurement season, increase market supply, and keep prices under control.
★ However, an important factor remains the weather situation. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon has so far remained significantly weaker than normal, raising concerns about the potential impact of El Niño. If El Niño becomes more active, it could adversely affect kharif crop production, which may subsequently influence rabi crops as well.
★ Under such circumstances, the government may consider extending the duration of the OMSS program.
