News Capsule: Government Standardises Edible Oil Pack Sizes, Oils to Be Sold Only in Fixed Quantities
★ To help consumers compare prices more easily and improve transparency in packaging, the Central Government has made standard pack sizes mandatory for edible oils. The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued a new order giving manufacturers, importers and packers three months to comply with the revised norms.
★ Under the new rules, edible oils can only be sold in nine standard pack sizes: 200 ml/g, 500 ml/g, 1 litre/kg, 2 litre/kg, 3 litre/kg, 4 litre/kg, 5 litre/kg, 15 litre/kg and 20 litre/kg.
★ The regulation applies to palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, mustard oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, rice bran oil, cottonseed oil and blended edible oils.
★ In recent years, non-standard pack sizes such as 650 g, 810 g and 870 g had become increasingly common in the market. Such pack sizes often made it difficult for consumers to compare the actual value and price of products across different brands.
★ With uniform pack sizes, consumers will be able to compare prices on a per-litre or per-kilogram basis more easily and make better purchasing decisions.
★ The new provisions also require products that display quantity by volume to mention the equivalent weight on the label. This is expected to improve transparency and help consumers better understand the actual quantity of the product they are buying.
★ However, packs smaller than 200 ml and certain minor categories of edible oils have been exempted from the regulation to ensure that affordable, low-cost options remain available for consumers.
