News Capsule: Pulses Market Update
★ In major markets across the country on Monday, prices of chana and moong remained steady, while tur (arhar) witnessed a decline.
★ The weakness in tur prices is mainly due to ample supply and sluggish demand. Many millers and traders have already stocked up, limiting fresh buying. Additionally, lower prices of imported tur from Myanmar have added further pressure on the market.
★ Chana prices remained stable as demand and supply are balanced. A large portion of the new crop is being procured by the government at MSP, which has prevented excess pressure on open market prices. However, reports of rain-related crop damage in North India may influence prices going forward.
★ Moong prices also stayed steady, though market activity remained subdued. In Rajasthan, arrivals of the rabi moong crop have started declining, which could support prices in the near term. Arrivals of the summer moong crop are expected to begin by the end of April.
★ At present, tur remains under pressure, while chana and moong are stable. Looking ahead, factors such as potential El Niño impact, urea shortages, rising temperatures, and a weakening rupee against the dollar are likely to support an upward trend in pulses prices.
