News Capsule: Rabi sowing in the final phase, total acreage higher than last year
★ According to government data, the total area sown under all rabi crops stood at 634.14 lakh hectares as of January 2, higher than 617.74 lakh hectares during the same period last year. Around 20 lakh hectares were added in the past one week, indicating brisk sowing activity as the rabi season approaches its final stage.
★ The total acreage under oilseeds was reported at 96.30 lakh hectares, up 3.3 per cent from 93.27 lakh hectares a year ago. Mustard remained the dominant oilseed, with the area sown increasing to 89.36 lakh hectares, compared with 86.57 lakh hectares last year, reflecting a growth of 3.2 per cent.
★ Overall, rabi sowing is now at its concluding stage, and the current trend suggests that the total cropped area is likely to reach the normal level in the coming days.
