News Capsule: Strengthening agri-exports: The role of processed sugar in India’s global trade strategy
★ India’s sugar industry has undergone a major structural transformation in recent years, evolving from a domestic commodity supplier into a globally competitive manufacturing sector aligned with international standards—especially in refined and processed sugar.
~~~~~~
Strong production growth
★ Current season data highlights this shift:
★ Production (Jan 2026): 193.05 lakh metric tonnes
★ Production (Jan 2025): 165.30 lakh metric tonnes
★ Recovery rate: 9.11%
★ This growth reflects improved efficiency and a stronger capacity to support exports.
~~~~~~
Export policy and market expansion
★ To manage surplus production, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has adopted a calibrated export strategy:
★ Initial export quota: 15 lakh tonnes
★ Aditional quota: 5 lakh tonnes
★ Total exports allowed: 20 lakh tonnes
★ This approach balances domestic supply while enabling producers to tap global demand. Refined and white sugar are leading export segments.
★ A key pillar of the sector’s transformation is its alignment with the National Biofuel Policy:
★ India is progressing toward a 20% ethanol blending target
★ Sugar mills are increasingly producing both sugar and ethanol
★ This dual strategy improves capacity utilisation, diversifies revenue streams, and supports energy security.
★ The expansion of processed sugar exports strengthens farmer incomes:
★ Supports over 50 million sugarcane farmers
★ FRP for 2025–26 fixed at ₹355 per quintal
★ A stable and stronger industry ensures timely payments and income security for farmers.
~~~~~~~~
Indian mills are upgrading operations by:
★ Adopting sulphur-free and clean-label refining processes
★ Shifting focus from raw sugar to higher-value products
★ This helps India access premium global markets and reduce exposure to volatile raw sugar prices.
★ As the industry modernises and aligns with national priorities like biofuels and exports, processed sugar is emerging as a key pillar of India’s agri-export strategy—strengthening trade balance and positioning the country as a competitive player in global agricultural value chains.
