★ India’s cumulative monsoon rainfall deficit for the 2026-27 season has widened to 14%, while August rainfall is running 16.5% below normal. The entire Southern Peninsula has received deficient rainfall, while parts of Northwest and Northeast India are also facing rainfall stress.
★ Weather conditions in Maharashtra and Karnataka now require close monitoring as both are key sugarcane-producing states. While one month of below-normal rainfall alone is unlikely to determine the crop outcome, a lack of adequate rainfall in September could put pressure on cane yields and ratoon crop performance.
