News Capsule: Wheat Procurement Reaches 357 Lakh Tonnes, Exceeds Target by 11 Lakh Tonnes
★ Government wheat procurement for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season is nearing completion. As of June 15, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies had procured 357 lakh tonnes of wheat, up 19% from last year and 11 lakh tonnes above the revised procurement target of 346 lakh tonnes.
★ Nearly 242 lakh tonnes, or 68% of the total procurement, was purchased under relaxed quality specifications (URS wheat). The government had eased quality norms to allow procurement of weather-damaged wheat, increasing the permissible limit for shrivelled and broken grains from 6% to 15%.

Major State-wise Procurement
★ Punjab: 121 lakh tonnes
★ Haryana: 81 lakh tonnes
★ Madhya Pradesh: 104 lakh tonnes (up 34% year-on-year; entire procurement under FAQ quality)
★ Rajasthan: 26 lakh tonnes (up 27%; procurement continues until end-June)
★ Uttar Pradesh: 20 lakh tonnes (up 110% year-on-year)
★ Farmers brought around 427.5 lakh tonnes of wheat to mandis by June 15, of which the government procured over 83%, highlighting a strong government presence in the market.
★ With procurement set to conclude by June 30 and central pool stocks rising sharply, the government is expected to begin wheat sales under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) without significant delay. Millers and traders are closely watching upcoming OMSS allocations, as they are likely to influence wheat prices and market sentiment in the coming months.
