Not much movement in Canadian lentil market

The Canadian lentil market is currently experiencing some stability with minimal price fluctuations. Red lentils are priced at 32.5-33.5 cents per pound, with some markets quoting up to 34 cents per pound. This price stability has led to a sense of satisfaction among buyers, as significant price hikes could potentially impact business.

For green lentils, the price of number 2 grade thick green lentils is between 58-60 cents per pound, while number 1 and extra number 2 grades are valued at 63-64 cents per pound.

Small green lentils are priced around 53-55 cents per pound in the spot market. Despite a significant decline in lentil production in Australia, the increased supply of new crops there has prevented any substantial price increases, especially for red lentils.

This is important since Canada and Australia are major competitors in the global red lentil export market, and price fluctuations in one country could create opportunities for the other.

In Canada, the lentil harvest has concluded, while Australia's harvest is still ongoing. In India, lentil sowing is in progress, with the area planted exceeding last year's figures.

In Canada, lentil sowing will take place in April-May next year, and there is an adequate exportable surplus, with efforts underway to boost shipments.
