The water situation in the northwestern region of India, particularly in Punjab, is currently alarming. As of the latest reports, the only reservoir in Punjab has only 22% of its total storage capacity remaining.
This is part of a broader issue affecting neighboring states: Himachal Pradesh’s reservoirs are at 39% capacity, while Rajasthan’s seven reservoirs are at 75%. Overall, the northern region has only 9.151 billion cubic meters (BCM) of water remaining, which is 44% of the total storage capacity of 19.836 BCM.
However, the recent rainfall in the region is expected to provide some relief. The rains that occurred on December 26-27 have been beneficial for Rabi crops in Punjab and Haryana, which were in dire need of water.
Agricultural experts believe that while this rainfall will support the wheat and other Rabi crops, the situation still requires careful monitoring.
The rain was timely for the crops, but for optimal production, it is crucial that the weather remains favorable for the next two to three months. Conditions like severe fog, mist, cold waves, and hailstorms should be avoided during this critical period for crop growth.
