New Delhi. The Estimates Committee of Parliament has prepared a detailed and evidence-based road map for mainstreaming sustainable and regular agricultural systems in the country, highlighting the important role of Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
Along with this, the committee has also suggested the government to take appropriate measures to make natural and organic agricultural systems economically profitable for producers. This measure should be scientifically valid so that farmers get adequate incentive to adopt it on a large scale.
In its report submitted to the Union Agriculture Ministry, the committee has also recommended several other suggestions, including determining a separate minimum support price (MSP) for selected organic crops and restarting the process of giving rank to Krishi Vigyan Kendras on the basis of their performance.
The committee says that the MSP of organic products should be higher than that of normal agricultural crops. At present, its price is also 20-30 percent higher and hence it should be made legal.
If a separate minimum support price is determined for organic crops, farmers will get a strong basis for future prices and their enthusiasm and attraction towards its cultivation will increase.
There are many challenges in the way of organic farming which need to be overcome. Firstly, the wage rate of workers remains high. There is difficulty in finding a place for farming and secondly, it is difficult to reach the market.
Apart from this, there is also a lack of necessary organic resources and especially bio-fertilizers. Actually, the dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides in farming has increased more than necessary, so the use of bio-fertilizers is decreasing.
