New Delhi. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has projected that the total availability of mustard in India during the 2025-26 season is likely to reach 125.40 lakh tonnes; this figure is lower than the government's estimate but higher than the estimates provided by industry and trade associations.
According to the USDA report, mustard production in India for the 2025-26 season is expected to stand at 120 lakh tonnes, while a carry-over stock of 5.40 lakh tonnes remains from the previous season. Mustard is not imported into the country.
As per the USDA report, mustard consumption in India during the 2025-26 season is projected to be 119.75 lakh tonnes, leaving a surplus stock of 5.65 lakh tonnes at the end of the season.
Mustard arrivals have been robust in the *mandis* (wholesale markets) of the major producing states, and prices are currently trading above the government's Minimum Support Price (MSP). Consequently, farmers are realizing good returns, while government agencies are finding limited opportunities to procure this key oilseed.
Compared to the previous year, there has been a slight increase in the area under mustard cultivation this season, and weather conditions have also remained satisfactory. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, and Gujarat are the major mustard-producing states, although it is also cultivated in several other states, including Bihar, Assam, and Punjab.
