Pea prices stable in Canada after sharp decline

Regina. To face the competition from cheap new goods from Russia, Canada had to cut its pea export offer price drastically and hence its price fell significantly in the domestic market. But now the prices have stabilized at a lower level.
On September 10, the price of yellow peas in the markets of Western Canada and especially Saskatchewan province remained stable at $ 6.50-6.75 per bushel on free on board basis, the price of green peas with the presence of maximum 3 percent bleached grain was $ 10 per bushel and the price of Maple peas was $ 9.50 per bushel.
There is a discussion that in order to prevent further fall in the prices of pulses in the domestic market, customs duty can be imposed on the import of yellow peas in India so that its huge import from abroad can be curbed.
At present, duty-free import of yellow peas has been allowed till March 31, 2026. This discussion is having a profound effect on the international market price of peas. There is already a hefty import duty of 100 per cent imposed on Canadian peas in China.
Usually the price of Canadian peas is higher than that of Russia-Ukraine, but now it has become almost equal. If customs duty is imposed in India, it can have a negative impact on the Canadian pea market.
Since pea production is expected to increase in Canada during the 2025-26 season and there are clear indications of this, if the huge market of China and India closes,
the problem of producers and exporters will increase a lot. The price of yellow peas in Canada has already reached the lowest level of the season. If it falls further, the producers will start incurring losses.
