Regina. Although the crop of Kabuli chana in Canada has not fully matured due to which the pace of its harvesting is very slow, but still due to the overall challenges in the market, pressure is being seen on the prices.
The first challenge is related to the quality of Kabuli chana. There is a possibility of the quality of its grain being affected due to the unseasonal rain in late July and there is a lot of discussion about this.
Apart from this, in view of the delay in harvesting, some producers have started increasing the sale of their old stock, while most buyers are focused on the next new crop.
The price of Kabuli chana in Western Canada is currently running between 32-35 cents per pound and due to weak foreign demand, it is not expected to increase much in the near future.
The sowing of Kabuli chana was good and the condition of the crop was also good till mid-July, but after that the weather started deteriorating.
The good news is that unlike peas and lentils, the price of Kabuli chana has remained stable in a certain range for the last several weeks and has not fallen much.
In the coming weeks, when the arrival of new consignment of Kabuli chana increases in the Canadian markets, then the business activities may pick up a bit.
But even at that time, its price will depend on the export demand because there is limited consumption of Kabuli chana in the domestic division of Canada and most of the production is exported abroad.
This time, there are chances of better production and smooth supply situation in the major Kabuli chana producing countries in the North American continent - the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, due to which the prices may remain soft for a long time after harvesting.
