Pulse Market Update
Price Decline in Mandis:
Despite the decline in pulse prices in the mandis (markets) due to government interventions, retail prices still remains high.
Retail Price Pressure:
Last week, the government urged retailers to reduce pulse prices, but consumers still face high retail prices.
Current Retail Prices:
According to the Consumer Ministry, the all-India retail prices as on 30.12.24 are as follows:
Chana Dal: ₹93.57/kg
Toor Dal: ₹156.6/kg
Urad Dal: ₹123.81/kg
Moong Dal: ₹114/kg
Masoor Dal: ₹89.49/kg
While prices in mandis are much lower, retail prices have seen only minimal reduction over the past 2-3 months.
Government Actions:
To control pulse prices, the government extended imports of yellow peas and extended the import deadline for pulses (excluding moong) until March 31, 2025. This has led to a large influx of pulses from abroad.
Yellow Pea Imports:
A total of 2.3-2.4 million tons of yellow peas have been imported, which has also impacted the consumption of other pulses.
Tuar Production and Imports:
This year production of Tuar is good and imports are high.resulting, prices of tuar have decreased during the arrival period and now hovering around the MSP (Minimum Support Price) after being above MSP for the last two years.
Urad Imports:
Despite reduced production of urad, imports are still strong and Myanmar’s urad production is expected to reach 650,000 tons this year, leading to increased imports from Myanmar in the future.
Moong Market Stability:
The moong market has shown stability, and it needs to be checked how sowing for the upcoming summer season will impact prices. According to IGrain India, moong sowing may increase in upcoming summer season.
Chana Price Decline:
Chana (chickpea) has seen a one-sided price drop from last week onward, partly due to large import deals from Australia.
Pea Imports Impact:
The opening of yellow pea imports has affected demand for other pulses.
Lentil Market:
Last season, lentil prices were low during the arrival period, and with continued imports from Canada and Australia, prices were impacted throughout the season. This has led to reduced sowing of lentil in the current season.
Impact of Imports:
Overall, the large imports of pulses have eased supply availability, which significantly reduces the likelihood of major price hikes in the near future.
