New Delhi. Exports of Indian agricultural products have been increasing steadily over the past few months. A report by SBI Mutual Funds shows that agricultural exports have risen by 30 percent on a quarterly moving average basis in terms of quantity.

This report assessed the annual growth rate in the export of agricultural products since April 2019 and noted a significant increase in recent months.

According to the report, there was a remarkable 39 percent rise in export quantity in January 2025, followed by a 15 percent increase in February.

This growth is especially notable considering that, between mid-2022 and early 2024, export growth was either negative or limited to single digits.

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially from mid-2020 to early 2021, there had also been a major surge in agricultural exports.

For example, in December 2020, export volumes were more than 100 percent higher than in September 2019, reflecting strong global demand for Indian agricultural products during that crisis period.

Since December 2023, the trend has remained positive, and the growth rate has returned to the positive range. The latest figures indicate that the agriculture sector is recovering strongly and that the pace of exports is picking up.

This surge in exports comes at a time when food grain production in India is reaching new highs.

According to the second advance estimate of the Union Agriculture Ministry, total food grain production in the Rabi season of 2024-25 is expected to hit a record 1645 lakh tonnes, including 1154.30 lakh tonnes of wheat.

This is a 6 percent increase compared to the Rabi production of 1550 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. A substantial rise in the production of rice and coarse grains is also expected. India has long been a leading global exporter of rice.
