Ahmedabad. In the western Indian state of Gujarat, the total area under Rabi crops reached 47.31 lakh hectares by January 5, 2026, which is 24,000 hectares less than the 47.55 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
However, compared to the previous season, the area under wheat cultivation in the state increased from 13.42 lakh hectares to 14.22 lakh hectares, and the area under maize cultivation improved from 1.32 lakh hectares to 1.42 lakh hectares, resulting in an increase in the total area under food grains from 15.04 lakh hectares to 15.94 lakh hectares.
Similarly, the area under pulses increased from 9.11 lakh hectares to 9.39 lakh hectares, and the area under oilseeds improved from 2.60 lakh hectares to 2.82 lakh hectares. However, a significant decline in the area under sugarcane and spice crops resulted in the total area falling slightly short of last year's figures.
Among pulses, the area under gram increased from 8.40 lakh hectares to 8.89 lakh hectares, and among oilseeds, the area under mustard improved from 2.58 lakh hectares to 2.81 lakh hectares. However,
the area under sugarcane decreased from 1.74 lakh hectares to 1.57 lakh hectares. The area under spice crops such as cumin, coriander, fennel, and isabgol is lagging behind last season's figures, even though the sowing process is almost complete.
