Rabi Crop Area Reaches Nearly 581 Lakh Hectares

New Delhi: The latest weekly data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture shows that the total area under Rabi crops has increased to 580.70 lakh hectares as of December 19 this year, which is 8.10 lakh hectares more than the 572.60 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.

The average area under Rabi crops this time is estimated at 637.81 lakh hectares. Notably, the total area under Rabi crops during 2024-25 reached 659.39 lakh hectares. Sowing of Rabi crops is still underway in many states of the country and will continue in January.

According to official data, compared to last year, the area sown under wheat at the national level during the current Rabi season has improved from 300.39 lakh hectares to 301.63 lakh hectares, the area under paddy has increased from 11.52 lakh hectares to 13.35 lakh hectares,

the area under pulses has jumped from 123.02 lakh hectares to 126.74 lakh hectares, the area under coarse grains has improved from 45.05 lakh hectares to 45.66 lakh hectares, and the area under oilseed crops has increased from 92.65 lakh hectares to 93.33 lakh hectares.

The area under wheat is still ahead of last year, but the difference has narrowed considerably. Its normal average area is fixed at 312.35 lakh hectares.

Among pulse crops, only the area under gram has jumped from 86.81 lakh hectares last year to 91.70 lakh hectares this year, while the area under all other pulses is lagging behind last year. This includes lentils, peas, horse gram, urad, moong, and khesari, etc. The normal average area for pulses is fixed at 140.42 lakh hectares.

A mixed trend is being observed in the sowing of oilseed crops. Under this scheme, the area under mustard, safflower, and sunflower has increased, but the area under groundnut and linseed has decreased. The total area under oilseeds remains almost the same.

In the coarse grains category, the sowing of sorghum is lagging behind last year, while the area under maize, barley, and other crops is ahead, and the area under millet is the same.

With sowing continuing in various parts of the country, the area is expected to improve in the coming days.
