Record Import of Pulses Expected
★ From April to February, the import of pulses is expected to reach approximately 6.25 million tonnes.
★ This may include 1.15 million tonnes of desi (native) chickpeas, 1.16 million tonnes of pigeon peas (tur), 2.06 million tonnes of peas, 1.15 million tonnes of lentils (masoor), and 0.74 million tonnes of black gram (urad).
★ The record-high import volume could incur an expenditure of up to 5 trillion rupees.
★ Prices of all pulses remain below the MSP (Minimum Support Price), impacting farmers’ income.
★ Additionally, the increased availability has caused heavy losses to the pulse processing industry.
★ Lower prices may affect the sowing of pulses in the upcoming Kharif season.
