Record Rice, Wheat Production in 2024–25

New Delhi. New data released by the Union Agriculture Ministry under the fourth and advance production estimates shows that rice and wheat production during the entire 2024-25 marketing season has reached an all-time high.
Rice production surpassed 150 million tonnes for the first time, and wheat production also surpassed 117.5 million tonnes. Industry and trade, especially for wheat, disagree with this record production estimate, but that is a different matter.
According to official data, national rice production in the 2023-24 season was 137.825 million tonnes, which jumped to an all-time high of 150.185 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season.
Under this, Kharif rice production jumped from 113.259 million tons to 122.772 million tons, and Rabi rice production increased from 146.01 million tons to 161.29 million tons.
Furthermore, summer or Zaid rice production also improved from 99.65 million tons to 112.84 million tons.
Rice area under paddy cultivation jumped to a peak of 44.1 million hectares in the 2025-26 Kharif season, and abundant southwest monsoon rains also resulted, so rice production is expected to increase further. Rabi rice cultivation is currently underway.
As for wheat, the Ministry of Agriculture estimates its production to reach an all-time high of 117.945 million tons in the 2024-25 season,
significantly exceeding the record production of 113.292 million tons in the 2023-24 season. Previously, the third advance estimate had projected wheat production at 117.5 million tonnes.
With record production of rice and wheat expected, a significant increase in the production of coarse grains is also projected.
