Rice prices improve after Bangladesh opens imports
★ Following Bangladesh’s announcement to import rice, prices in Kolkata and nearby markets saw an uptrend.
★ A month ago, Bangladesh had approved the import of 500,000 tons of rice.
★ To meet consumption needs, Bangladesh removed the 20% import duty on rice. Export demand from India pushed up prices of Ratna and Sona Masoori varieties.
★ The opening of imports has provided some relief to the rice industry, which had been facing a prolonged slowdown, and prices are expected to remain firm going forward.
