Sharp Decline in Basmati Rice Export Prices
★ During the same period last year, the export price of Basmati rice was $1040/ton, which has now fallen to $875/ton.
★ After the export ban was lifted, exporters purchased Basmati rice at high prices, resulting in losses now.
★ According to APEDA, 4.24 million tonnes of Basmati rice were exported from April to December, compared to 3.54 million tonnes during the same period last year.
★ Encouraged by good prices last season, farmers increased Basmati production.
★ Prices of both Basmati and non-Basmati rice are currently very low in domestic markets.
★ Farmers and the rice industry are incurring losses.
