Sharp Increase in Moong Sowing
★ Moong sowing has been increasing during the summer season over the past five years. In the current season, summer moong sowing reached 0.257 million hectares (2.57 lakh hectares) as of March 20, compared to 0.218 million hectares (2.18 lakh hectares) last year.
★ Similarly, the urad area has also increased to 0.128 million hectares (1.28 lakh hectares) from 0.114 million hectares (1.14 lakh hectares) last year.
★ Since it is a short-duration crop, farmers are gradually increasing the area under moong cultivation.
★ Earlier, the main sowing of moong was done during the Kharif season, but gradually the summer season is surpassing Kharif in terms of moong production.
★ As moong is now produced in different seasons, its availability remains throughout the year, which reduces the sharp impact on prices.
