Pulse sowing for the Kharif 2025 season has picked up significant momentum in Maharashtra. According to data from the Agriculture Department, as of June 16, 2025, total pulse sowing in the state has reached 2,18,774 hectares, which is 1,68,315 hectares more than the same time last year.
Tuar has been sown over 96,200 hectares, compared to just 30,689 hectares last year – an increase of 65,511 hectares.
Moong sowing has reached 34,630 hectares, up 22,841 hectares from last year.
Urad has shown the steepest rise, with sowing reaching 85,565 hectares, up 77,854 hectares from the previous year.
Other pulses have been sown on 2,379 hectares, compared to only 271 hectares last year.
Overall, the area under pulses has reached 2.18 lakh hectares, compared to the five-year average of 20.30 lakh hectares.
The data suggests that a timely onset of the monsoon and active participation from farmers have led to a strong start in sowing.
However, it's worth noting that the monsoon arrived early in Maharashtra this year, so initial sowing figures are naturally higher than last year.
The real picture will emerge only towards the end of the sowing period
