Slow progress in urad sowing
★ Kharif season 2025 has shown mixed trends in urad (black gram) sowing.
★ As of July 11, 2025, a total of 11.46 lakh hectares have been sown under urad across the country, compared to 11.54 lakh hectares during the same period last year — marking a decline of 0.08 lakh hectares.

State-wise status (based on data from respective State Agriculture Departments):
Maharashtra (as of 14.07.2025):
★ Urad has been sown in 3.23 lakh hectares this year, down from 3.29 lakh hectares last year — a decrease of 0.06 lakh hectares.
Gujarat (as of 14.07.2025):
★ Sowing has improved this year with 0.25 lakh hectares covered, compared to 0.16 lakh hectares last year — an increase of 0.09 lakh hectares.
Karnataka (as of 11.07.2025):
★ This year, 0.91 lakh hectares have been sown under urad, up from 0.88 lakh hectares last year — an increase of 0.03 lakh hectares.
Telangana (as of 16.07.2025):
★ Sowing has reached 0.12 lakh hectares this year, slightly higher than 0.10 lakh hectares last year — a rise of 0.02 lakh hectares.
Rajasthan (as of 14.07.2025):
★ The state has seen a healthy rise with 2.72 lakh hectares sown, compared to 2.33 lakh hectares last year — an increase of 0.39 lakh hectares.
★ In these 5 key states, total urad sowing has reached 7.23 lakh hectares, up from 6.78 lakh hectares last year — a gain of 0.45 lakh hectares.
★ Despite some states showing improvement, the slight dip at the national level remains a concern. If monsoon conditions improve in the coming weeks, sowing could pick up pace, potentially boosting overall production.
