Small cardamom rises by ₹500 in a week

New Delhi. The price of small cardamom has entered an upward phase, with auction prices at production centers increasing by ₹500 per kg over the past week. Market sentiment remains bullish.
Sources indicate that while auction prices are climbing, prices in Delhi have risen more modestly—by about ₹50–100 per kg—due to sufficient stock at consumption centers. However, market activity is expected to pick up. In April, buying by both consumption centers and exporters was subdued. Now, exporter demand has strengthened, and consumption hubs like Delhi and Gwalior are expected to increase their purchases in upcoming auctions due to thinning inventories.
Price surge details
Cardamom prices have been consistently rising over the past week. At the Climate Natural Spice Pvt. Ltd. auction on May 9, the average price was ₹1,972.75 per kg. At the RNS Spice auction held today, the average price jumped to ₹2,478.98 per kg.
Favourable weather may boost crop
Sources also report that weather conditions in the key growing states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been favourable this year. As a result, the July harvest is expected to be better than last year’s. Last season, cardamom production in the country was estimated to be around 20,000–22,000 tonnes, significantly affected by adverse weather.
Export volumes up
Low global production last season contributed to a rise in Indian cardamom exports. According to Spices Board data, 4,926 tonnes of small cardamom were exported between April and December 2024, compared to 3,588 tonnes during the same period in 2023.
