Idukki: Recent pre-monsoon rains in Kerala's major cardamom-producing areas, especially Idukki district, have significantly improved the outlook for this year's small cardamom crop.
According to experts from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the rains have created ideal conditions for growth, and farmers can now begin fertilizer application.
Key regions like Vandanmedu, Kumily, Nedumkandam, and Kattapanna have received consistent rainfall, accelerating crop development.
The harvest is expected to begin by mid-July, earlier than last year when production was hit by drought.
While newly planted vines won't contribute this season, older plantations are showing strong potential, raising hopes of a much better yield compared to last year’s low of 50–100 kg per acre.
This year, growers are optimistic of achieving the normal yield of 350–400 kg per acre. The Spices Board has also expressed optimism about improved production.
