The government to reduce broken rice percentage in 5 million tonnes of FCI stock.
★ Under the new plan, the Centre has prepared a strategy to separate broken rice from 5 million tonnes of rice stock.
★ Last year, a pilot project was conducted in Punjab, Haryana, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, where 15% broken rice was separated. The project was successful.
★ So far, rice with 10% broken grains is being sold to private companies. In the future, the government may consider supplying this rice through the Public Distribution System (PDS).
★ For example, if a mill has to supply 100 quintals of rice to FCI, it will provide 85 quintals of rice (with a maximum of 10% broken grains) and 15 quintals of fully broken rice separately.
★ Another key objective is to ensure 100% broken rice supply for ethanol production.
★ Broken rice will now be auctioned directly from rice mills to distilleries to reduce storage, transport, and fortification costs.
★ Due to low demand for FCI rice in the open market, the government is facing difficulties in liquidating the stock.
