The Roller Flour Millers Federation of India (RFMFI) released the Annual Wheat Survey Report 2026 yesterday.
Sanjeev Chopra, Food Secretary, stated that:
★ Over the past 4 years, wheat procurement has seen significant fluctuations—sometimes declining and sometimes increasing. Paddy arrivals continue throughout the year, whereas wheat arrives only once during the season.
★ This year, lower wheat prices may lead to higher procurement.
★ When the government estimated wheat production at 120.2 million tonnes, weather conditions were favorable; however, conditions worsened later, and revised figures will be reflected in the next estimate.
★ Due to rainfall, URS (Under Relaxed Specifications) wheat procurement was initiated. Earlier, farmers faced deductions for damaged produce, but now they are receiving full MSP even for URS wheat.
★ At the beginning of this month, the country had sufficient wheat stocks of around 22 million tonnes.
★ Procurement has reached 16.4 million tonnes so far, with 98% of farmers receiving payment within 48 hours.
★ Considering increased arrivals and crop size, the procurement target has been raised to 34.5 million tonnes from the earlier 30.3 million tonnes.
★ Procurement targets have been increased in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, while no changes were made for other states.
★ The quantity of wheat procured by the government determines the volume sold under OMSS.
