Three months' ration to be distributed at once
★ The central government has allowed states to lift and distribute ration for June, July, and August in May itself.
★ There is a large stock of wheat and rice available with the Food Corporation of India (FCI). With new wheat arrivals, storage space needs to be freed in the warehouses.
★ Around 5 million tonnes of foodgrain is distributed monthly to 800 million people for free, totaling 60 million tonnes annually.
★ As of April 27, the central stock was 66.17 million tonnes, which is more than the total yearly distribution requirement.
★ A similar step was taken during the Covid pandemic, when two months' ration was distributed at once.
★ This move will help free up warehouse space and allow storage of the new harvest.
★ It will also increase the availability of foodgrains in the open market.
★ Following the circular and news of a ceasefire, Delhi wheat prices fell by ₹50 yesterday.
