New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Agriculture, while announcing the procurement of 2 million tonnes of potatoes in Uttar Pradesh at a rate of ₹6,500 per tonne under the Market Intervention Scheme, has extended the deadline for the procurement of Tuar (Red Gram) in Karnataka by 30 days, setting the new deadline at May 15, 2026. Meanwhile, the declared procurement quantity for Gram (Chana) in Andhra Pradesh has also been increased.
It is noteworthy that the Karnataka government is currently procuring Tuar from farmers at a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹8,000 per quintal. Separately, the Andhra Pradesh government had submitted a proposal to the Centre to procure an additional quantity of Gram beyond the initial limit of 94,500 tonnes, which has now been approved.
The procurement of both Tuar and Gram is being conducted under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). Consequently, the total approved quantity for Gram procurement in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 113,250 tonnes. The Minimum Support Price for Gram (Desi variety) has been fixed at ₹5,875 per quintal for the current season.
Karnataka is a leading producer of Tuar. The extension of the procurement deadline in the state has provided farmers with additional time to sell their produce. Prices of Tuar had begun to come under pressure due to robust supply coupled with weak demand.
