Turmeric Exports Down, Cardamom & Pepper Imports Rise

Mumbai: According to a leading trade analyst, India’s turmeric exports fell by 4% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2025 (January–March), reaching 39,400 tonnes. Export earnings dropped even more sharply by 13%, totaling $75.1 million. During this period, 20% of India’s turmeric exports were shipped to Bangladesh, 8% to Morocco, and 7% to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the remainder going to various other countries.
On the other hand, India’s imports of large cardamom surged by 11% during the four-month period from January to April 2025, reaching 1,790 tonnes. Of this, 64% was sourced from Nepal, while 9% came from Bhutan.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s exports of black pepper rose sharply in Q1 2025. Shipments jumped by 54% year-on-year to reach 12,340 tonnes, while export earnings soared by 108% to $79 million. Interestingly, Vietnam—the world’s top producer and exporter of black pepper—accounted for 32% of Indonesia’s imports of the spice. The United States and China each accounted for 15% of Indonesia's black pepper exports. Several other countries also imported black pepper from Indonesia.
From Spain, exports of almonds reached 9,780 tonnes in April 2025—an increase of 9% compared to April 2024.
From Sri Lanka, exports of desiccated coconut declined by 29% during the January–May 2025 period, falling to 11,620 tonnes. However, India’s imports of desiccated coconut during the same period increased by 2%, reaching 3,440 tonnes, while Germany’s imports rose 33% to 990 tonnes. Export performance to other countries remained weak. India accounted for 30% of Sri Lanka’s total exports of desiccated coconut.
