Tuvar and Urad Sowing Lags, Moong Surpasses Last Year

New Delhi. A mixed trend is being seen in the sowing of Kharif pulses crops. On the one hand, there is a tremendous increase in the production area of Moong and Moth, on the other hand, a decline is being seen in the sowing area of Arhar (Tuvar) and Urad.
Of course, the government has increased the minimum support price (MSP) of Tuvar by Rs 450 from Rs 7550 per quintal to Rs 8000 per quintal for the 2024-25 season and the MSP of Urad has been increased by Rs 400 from Rs 7400 per quintal to Rs 7800 per quintal, but at the same time, its duty-free and control-free import period has also been extended by one year to March 31, 2026. On the other hand, the import of Moong has been banned since February 2022.
According to government data, the production area of pulses in Kharif season has increased by 3.10 lakh hectares from 89.95 lakh hectares last year to 93.05 lakh hectares this time, but only moong and moth have contributed to it.
The production area of moong has jumped from 26.35 lakh hectares last year to 30.60 lakh hectares this time. The area of moth in Rajasthan has increased from 7.08 lakh hectares to 8.88 lakh hectares.
On the other hand, during the current Kharif season, compared to last year, the sowing area of urad has fallen from 17.80 lakh hectares to 16.60 lakh hectares and the production area of tuvar has come down from 38 lakh hectares to 34.90 lakh hectares.
Although the government has promised to purchase 100% marketable quantity of tuvar and urad at the minimum support price, but the farmers are probably not completely convinced by this.
In the Kharif marketing season 2024-25, a record purchase of about 6 lakh tonnes of tur was made by the government agency from farmers, which was less than 20 percent of its total domestic production.
The sowing campaign of pulses crops has not ended yet, but the ideal time is fast passing while the normal average area is far away. It will be interesting to see how much improvement comes in the area of tur and urad during the coming weeks.
