Weather likely to turn cold in Uttar Pradesh and rain at some places

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a change in weather conditions for Uttar Pradesh during the current week, influenced by a western disturbance.

This is expected to bring a drop in temperatures, increased cloud cover, and potential rainfall in certain regions. Specifically, on March 11 and 12, winds are anticipated to blow at speeds of 20 to 30 km/h across various parts of the state.

Light to moderate rainfall is possible in some areas on March 13 and 14. While such weather patterns can generally benefit Rabi crops by providing necessary moisture, there is a concern for crops that have matured and are ready for harvest, as rainfall could potentially cause damage.

Over the past few days, Uttar Pradesh has experienced a rapid increase in temperatures. The IMD predicts that temperatures will stabilize for the next three to four days before rising again.

Around the festival of Holi, daytime temperatures are expected to reach 35°C, with nighttime temperatures around 18°C. These elevated temperatures may not be favorable for Rabi crops, potentially accelerating their maturation process.

In Uttar Pradesh, wheat and mustard are among the primary Rabi crops. The wheat crop has begun ripening in some regions, and the state government plans to commence procurement from March 17. Additionally, the arrival of new mustard produce is anticipated to increase soon.

Lentil and pea crops in the Bundelkhand region are reportedly in good condition. However, with temperatures expected to rise from March 15, there is a possibility that some Rabi crops may mature earlier than usual.

Late-sown crops are less likely to be affected, but it remains essential to monitor rainfall patterns closely to mitigate potential impacts on the harvest.

Historically, unseasonal rains have posed challenges to agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. For instance, in March 2015, unexpected rainfall and hailstorms caused significant damage to Rabi crops across several northern states, including Uttar Pradesh.

Such events underscore the importance of preparedness and timely interventions to protect farmers' livelihoods and ensure food security.

Farmers are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to safeguard their crops during this period of fluctuating weather conditions.
