Lentil prices fluctuate as demand remains normal
The weekly review of lentil prices highlights several regional fluctuations in the market due to varying demand and export performance, particularly influenced by Canada, the leading producer of lentils.
Price Fluctuations:
- Desi Lentils saw a decline early in the week due to profit booking, weak buying, and increased sales. However, prices picked up towards the weekend with a boost in demand.
- Mumbai: Lentil prices rose by Rs. 150-250 per quintal, with prices for container Canada and Australia lentils reaching Rs. 6350-6400 per quintal.
- Kolkata: Prices saw a slight increase of Rs. 50 per quintal, with Canada and Australia prices at Rs. 6150 and Rs. 6250 per quintal respectively.
- Delhi: Lentil prices fell by Rs. 50 per quintal, with the prices at the weekend for different varieties ranging between Rs. 6450 and Rs. 6800.
- Madhya Pradesh: Prices fell due to weak demand, with decreases of Rs. 50-100 per quintal, depending on the region.
- Uttar Pradesh: Prices improved due to higher demand, rising by Rs. 50-100 per quintal.
- Bihar: Prices remained stable with no significant changes during the week.
- Raipur: Lentil prices saw a rise of Rs. 200 per quintal, reaching Rs. 6200 per quintal.
Export Performance:
- Canada had a stronger export performance compared to last year, with exports for the period August-December 2024 increasing by 2.33 lakh tonnes. However, December 2024 saw a slight drop in exports, especially to Turkey and India.
Masoor Dal: The prices of Masoor Dal also saw an improvement this week, rising by Rs. 100 per quintal in various regions, including Indore, Barh, and Khusrupur.
The market dynamics continue to show some regional volatility, influenced by both domestic demand and global export trends, especially from key producers like Canada.
