Paddy Prices Rise on Millers' Buying, Rice Prices Remain Soft

New Delhi: During the week of April 5–11, paddy prices showed an upward trend in several markets due to limited supply and millers’ purchases, while rice prices softened due to low export demand, though international trade is showing signs of recovery.

Paddy Market:

  • Delhi (Narela Mandi):

    • 1509 paddy: Up by Rs 50

    • 1718 paddy: Up by Rs 75

    • Sharbati: Down by Rs 25

  • Chhattisgarh (Rajim): Softened by Rs 10–50/quintal

  • Uttar Pradesh (Mainpuri): 1509 paddy up by Rs 50

  • Supply: Active in Narela, Tarn Taran, and parts of UP, Kota, Bundi (Rajasthan)

Supply Outlook:

  • Kharif non-Basmati rice: Very limited inflow

  • Basmati rice: Steady supply as farmers clear stock

  • Rabi rice: Harvesting and market arrivals began from April 1

  • Paddy transplantation: To begin in June

Rice Market:

  • Raichur (Karnataka): Most rice varieties declined by Rs 100–200/quintal

  • Amritsar:

    • 1509 Sela rice: Up by Rs 100

    • 1718 Sela rice: Up by Rs 250

    • 1718 Steam rice: Down by Rs 250

  • Bundi: Sugandha and 1509 rice up by Rs 150

  • Karnal (Haryana): Down by Rs 200/quintal

Export Outlook:
India’s rice export deregulation has opened up opportunities. While global prices had dropped due to competition from Vietnam, Thailand, and Pakistan, recent signals indicate a gradual recovery, with demand growing from Asia and Africa.
