Wheat prices improve due to better trading activity
New Delhi: During the week of August 22–28, wheat prices saw an increase of ₹30–50 per quintal, driven by renewed buying interest from flour millers and processors and the fact that sales from government stocks had not yet commenced; however, prices remained weak in some *mandis* (wholesale markets).
Prices
Wheat prices dropped by ₹100 per quintal in Rajkot (Gujarat), ₹40 in Kota (Rajasthan), and ₹45 in Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh), as demand lagged behind market arrivals in these regions. Conversely, during the same period, the price in Delhi rose by ₹30 to reach ₹2,910–2,920 per quintal.
Arrivals
Daily market arrivals ranged between 4,000 and 7,000 bags. Prices firmed up by approximately ₹40 in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and improved by ₹20 in the Bundi *mandi* (Rajasthan). In Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh), the price of wheat increased by ₹50, reaching ₹2,630 per quintal.
Stocks
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) holds massive wheat stocks, yet e-auctions under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) have not yet begun.
Exports
The government has deregulated the export of wheat and its value-added products; however, prices have not witnessed the expected surge.
Demand
Domestic demand is expected to rise during the festive season. Export performance remains lackluster, although global market prices have started to firm up slightly.
