Wheat procurement crosses 3 million tonnes; surge in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh
★ In the 2025-26 procurement season, the government has so far procured 3.1 million tonnes (31 lakh tonnes) of wheat — a significant increase compared to 1.7 million tonnes during the same period last year. The government's target for this season is to procure a total of 31.2 million tonnes.
★ Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the top contributor, with 2.7 million tonnes of wheat procured so far — more than double the 1.2 million tonnes procured during the same period last year. Farmers are being paid the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs. 2,425 per quintal plus a bonus of Rs. 175 per quintal.
★ Rajasthan has procured 2.02 lakh tonnes, a fourfold increase from last year’s 52,693 tonnes. Here too, a bonus of Rs. 150 per quintal is being provided over and above the MSP.
★ Uttar Pradesh has recorded procurement of 1,42,332 tonnes, compared to 1,16,332 tonnes last year.
In Punjab, wheat procurement began on April 1. A significant pickup in arrivals and procurement is expected after Baisakhi (April 13).
★ Haryana has reported procurement of 15,204 tonnes so far, with further increases expected in the coming days.
★ According to the Ministry of Agriculture, wheat production in the 2024-25 rabi season is projected at 115.43 million tonnes, up 2% from last year’s 113.29 million tonnes. Favorable weather and increased sowing area are expected to result in record output.
