New Delhi. The Central Government has allocated 5 lakh tonnes of rice and 5 lakh tonnes of wheat for sale under its Bharat Brand scheme.

The sale price of rice may be Rs 34 per kg and the sale price of flour made from this wheat may be Rs 32-33 per kg, whereas earlier the price of flour was fixed at Rs 30 per kg.

The reason given for this is that last year wheat was purchased at the rate of Rs 2275 per quintal, whereas during the current year it was purchased at the rate of Rs 2425 per quintal.

As far as rice is concerned, only its old stock will be sold, hence there will be no change in its sale price. According to official sources, earlier a plan was made to mix soymeal in Bharat flour, but now it has been postponed.

It is noteworthy that after the sale of the old allotted quota, the sale of rice and flour under the Bharat brand was stopped in June, but now it has been decided to start it again so that the general consumers can get some relief during the festive season.

It is worth noting that the sale of Bharat flour first started from 6 November 2023, while the sale of Bharat brand rice was also started from 6 February 2024. According to official figures, about 19 lakh tonnes of wheat and about 18 lakh tonnes of rice have been allotted and marketed under the Bharat brand so far.

According to senior official sources, if required further, additional quota of wheat and rice can be allotted. At present, the inflation rate is low and hence the food grain quota has been kept much smaller than last year.

The government will keep an eye on the retail demand of rice and flour and accordingly will decide to allocate more stock if needed.

This allotted quota of rice and wheat will be distributed among three government agencies- Kendriya Bhandar, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF). These agencies will sell rice directly but will first get the wheat milled and packed and then sell the flour made from it.
