The import of Indian rice through Bangladesh's Bhomra Land Port in Satkhira has significantly increased, with more than 6,520 tonnes arriving in the past eight days.

This influx of rice is part of efforts to boost domestic supply and control rising prices. The government, after removing customs duties on rice imports, allowed both commercial and government-level imports to begin on November 13, 2024.

This move has been essential as Bangladesh anticipates a decline in its rice production, making imports crucial to stabilizing the market.

A total of 12 companies have been authorized by the Food Ministry to import rice, with both Dhaka-based and other companies participating.

One Dhaka-based company imported 1,861.47 tonnes in several shipments over the course of a few days in November.

Another firm brought in 300 tonnes. The reduction in customs duties, along with the Indian government's withdrawal of a ban on rice exports and the 20% export duty, has paved the way for increased rice imports.

The Bangladesh government has also begun issuing tenders for additional rice imports, highlighting the critical need to secure rice supplies as production within the country is expected to decrease.
