The advance estimate of Rabi crop production in Gujarat paints a mixed picture. The state is anticipating increases in the production of some major crops, particularly wheat and maize. Wheat production is set to rise from 39 lakh tons last year to 43.44 lakh tons, while maize production is expected to grow from 3.24 lakh tons to 3.55 lakh tons. This would be beneficial for the state's food grain supply.
However, some crops are seeing a decline in production. The output of gram is expected to fall from 16.66 lakh tons to 15.51 lakh tons, and mustard production is likely to decrease slightly from 5.26 lakh tons to 5.14 lakh tons.
The spice crop sector is also facing challenges. The area under cumin cultivation has dropped significantly, leading to a sharp decline in its expected production, from 4.18 lakh tons to 3.65 lakh tons.
Fennel is also expected to suffer a major dip, with its production possibly falling from 2.17 lakh tons to around 1 lakh ton. Additionally, isabgol's production is set to drop from 24 thousand tons to 21 thousand tons.
On a brighter note, coriander production is expected to rise from 2.04 lakh tons to 2.24 lakh tons. The area under coriander cultivation had been declining earlier, but there has been a positive shift, ensuring smoother supply and availability.
In summary, while Gujarat is set to see strong performance in wheat and maize production, some spice crops and pulses may face challenges this Rabi season.
