America Postponed Tariff till 1 August 2025

New Delhi. The United States had initially planned to implement a new tariff system from April 2, but later postponed it to July 9. Now, even before that deadline expired, the U.S. has announced an extension of the postponement period till August 1, 2025. This decision provides temporary relief to India, which is currently engaged in negotiations with the U.S. for a bilateral trade agreement. The extension offers extra time to resolve outstanding issues and finalize the deal.
India has gained immediate respite from the imposition of reciprocal tariffs. However, the U.S. continues to press India to open its market to American agricultural products, particularly GM soybean and maize.
The Indian government remains firm on protecting the interests of its farmers and has so far resisted these demands.
Alongside India, the U.S. is also in trade negotiations with several other countries, which contributed to the decision to extend the tariff deferment by around three weeks.
Indian ministers, including the Commerce Minister, Agriculture Minister, and Finance Minister, have all reiterated that there will be no compromise on the welfare of Indian farmers.
Interestingly, India’s name was not included in the recent list of countries to which the U.S. has issued official tariff notifications.
This list includes Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and South Africa, where the U.S. has confirmed that the new tariffs will be implemented from August 1.
The omission of India from the list signals that the U.S. is still hopeful of reaching a trade agreement with India before that date.
