Raipur. In Chhattisgarh, a leading state contributing rice to the central pool, the area under paddy cultivation during the current Kharif season has increased to 38.10 lakh hectares, which is 50 thousand hectares more than the target of 38.60 lakh hectares.
Actually, the farmers of Chhattisgarh are expecting to get a higher price for paddy this time and there has been good monsoon rain there.
Although the area under paddy cultivation in Chhattisgarh has reached above the target, the total area under Kharif crops is lagging behind the target, while the sowing process of crops has almost ended.
An interesting fact is that traditionally, farmers in Chhattisgarh worship their bulls and agricultural resources on the occasion of 'Hal Patti', which indicates that the sowing of crops has been completed. This year, the Hal Patti festival was celebrated on 24 August.
However, in some areas, sowing of crops continued till the first week of September. According to the state agriculture department, in the current Kharif season, the total area under crops reached 98 percent of the target.
In other, the total target area was set at 48.60 lakh hectares, while the actual area remained stuck at 47.60 lakh hectares.
Although the state government is running a campaign on a large scale to discourage paddy cultivation and encourage the cultivation of millets, pulses and oilseeds, the farmers are not much affected by this and do not want to give up paddy cultivation.
As a result, the area under pulses reached 89 percent and that under oilseeds reached 71 percent as compared to the target.
