Sydney. The Australian agricultural marketing season begins in October and continues through September.
The government agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), has released export data for wheat, barley, sorghum, and canola for the 2024-25 marketing season, showing overall improvement over the 2023-24 season. Canola export performance was somewhat weak, but shipments of cereal crops, primarily barley, saw significant growth.
According to the ABS report, during the 2024-25 marketing season, Australia's combined exports of the four agricultural commodities mentioned above—wheat, barley, sorghum, and canola—reached a record high of 39.62 million tonnes,
significantly exceeding the 2023-24 season's total shipments of 35.87 million tonnes and representing the third-highest export total ever. Previously, Australia exported 43.22 million tonnes in the 2021-22 season and 47.76 million tonnes in the 2022-23 season.
As expected, China remained the largest buyer of these Australian agricultural products, importing 9.42 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season, representing 23.80 percent of Australia's total exports.
China imported 29 percent, or 11.8 million tonnes, of grain and oilseeds from Australia in the 2023-24 season, while imports decreased in 2024-25. Under this, barley imports remained nearly stable at 6.03 million tonnes, representing an average monthly export of 0.5 million tonnes.
Meanwhile, sorghum imports increased by slightly more than 0.4 million tonnes to 2.34 million tonnes.
In contrast, Australian wheat imports to China declined by 72 percent, or 2.71 million tonnes, from 2.76 million tonnes in the 2023-24 season to 1.05 million tonnes in 2024-25. In fact, China's overall wheat imports declined significantly in the 2024-25 season.
Despite this, wheat remained Australia's most important agricultural commodity, enjoying strong demand in Southeast Asian countries. Australia exported 19.72 million tonnes of wheat in the 2023-24 season, which increased to 23.48 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season, representing 59.3 percent of the total exports of the four commodities mentioned above.
Australia shipped wheat to 44 countries worldwide. Earlier, 317.70 lakh tonnes of wheat was exported from Australia in the 2022-23 season, 274.50 lakh tonnes in 2021-22 and 237.10 lakh tonnes in 2020-21.
