Australia's gram business is brisk - lentil demand is weak

Brisbane. Plans are being made for shipping the new crop of gram from Australia's Queensland province.

There, the gram business has started increasing in the local market and the prices have also started to rise. The new crop of gram may start arriving at the end of September.

On the other hand, pressure is being seen on lentil prices because Canada's offer for South Asia has become more attractive.

The old stock of lentils in Australia has decreased significantly, while the producers there are not showing much interest in contracting the advance sale of their next new crop.

The reason for this is that on one hand the market price of lentils has decreased and secondly, there is concern about the crop yield rate in some areas.

As far as the crop condition is concerned, the condition of lentils and faba beans in Victoria province is satisfactory, while in New South Wales, the yield rate of gram and faba beans crop is expected to be better than the general average.

The condition of gram crop is also quite good in (Queensland) province. Overall, the production of gram is expected to increase.

But the lentil crop is said to be weak in South Australia province. There, the yield rate is expected to be affected in some districts due to lack of rain.

If there is heavy fog and mist in September-October, the day temperature remains high and the rainfall is less than the normal average, then the lentil crop may be in serious danger.

The offer price of new Australian gram for October-November shipment at Brisbane port has increased by about $ 50 per tonne since mid-July.

It is reported that about 5 lakh tonnes have been booked till January 2025.
